1999年にC57-180の復活に合わせて12系6両に専用塗装と車内改良を施し｢ばんえつ物語｣専用客車として登場しました。

2000年に展望車オハ12-1701が追加され7両となりました。

2014年はオコジョ展望車が登場、全車が2013年に登場したグリーン車に合わせた外観塗色になり活躍しています。
